Basic Function
The Executive Director will manage the Office of Technology’s Intellectual Property and Licensing group,
which is responsible for all Intellectual Property prosecution and Licensing transactions.
Responsibilities
Boston University’s Office of Technology Development seeks to maximize the transfer of Boston
University’s and Boston Medical Center’s research findings into wider societal use via technology
licensing in a manner that is consistent with academic principles, demonstrates a concern for the general
welfare and conforms to high ethical standards, thereby benefiting the public and fulfilling our obligations
under the Bayh-Dole Act.
The Intellectual Property and Licensing (IPL) group will:
• Provide accessible, responsive, competent, timely and professional intellectual property management
and licensing transaction services to BU and BMC, their faculty and staff;
• Ensure compliance with University policies;
• Ensure a friction-free interface with the Executive Director Business Development (BD) and the BD
group;
• Negotiate agreements that foster collaborative partnerships with industry and that ensure that BU and
BMC share equitably in commercial successes;
• Serve as an educational resource for information about patents and licensing, and to encourage
recognition that such matters have become important tools for the dissemination of research results;
• Facilitate the development of an entrepreneurial culture among BU faculty.
Specific duties include:
1. Leading the IPL team, including training, performance reviews and promotion decisions and directing
all activities of the office;
2. Coordinating transfer of licensing opportunities from BD to IPL;
3. Coordinating transfer from BD and prosecuting and managing patent applications;
4. Negotiating agreements including: a) Licenses, b) Material Transfer Agreements, c) Inter-institutional
Agreements, and d) Confidentiality Agreements
5. Managing team workload so as to meet office-wide performance objectives (patent expenditures,
income and transaction volume);
6. Support OTD operations, including idea management, HR issues and IT issues;
7. Ensure compliance with BU’s Patent Policies and other relevant policies;
8. Ensure compliance with BU’s Patent Policies and other relevant policies;
9. Manage the interface with BU and BMC Offices of General Counsel;
10. Manage the Charles River Campus and BUMC Patent Committees, including meetings and staffing.
Qualifications
• Required:
o At least 10 years of experience in executing technology related transactions
o At least 5 years supervisory experience;
o Graduate degree;
o Experience applying for and prosecuting patent applications;
o Excellent interpersonal communication skills;
o Excellent organizational, analytical and writing skills;
o Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously;
o Self-motivated, action and results oriented;
o Currently located in Massachusetts;
o US Citizen or Green Card holder.

o Legal background;
o Science or technology degree;
o Industrial experience.

The Technology & Innovation Development Office at Children’s Hospital Boston is seeking a Licensing Officer II.

Serving as the hospital’s representative in marketing, negotiating and securing transfer of Hospital-owned technology to for-profit corporations for its development and application, the LO II monitors and protects hospital interests in established corporate sponsored research programs. Identification, evaluation and marketing technology licensing and sponsored research opportunities to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical companies is the primary responsibility. Drafting and negotiating complex material transfer, licensing and sponsored research contracts and works with attorneys to obtain patents for Hospital-owned technology is also involved. Candidate will primarily work with researchers and innovations arising in the areas of Cardiology, Ophthalmology and Developmental Medicine/Autism.

A PhD in a scientific discipline is required (Biochemistry, Cellular or Molecular Biology concentrations are preferred) and a minimum of 5 years of comparable experience is required. Candidates with additional experience with clinical research in either Cardiology or Autism will be strongly considered.

NCIIA seeks an accomplished and enthusiastic individual with experience in developing and gaining funding for successful entrepreneurial training programs as Program Manager for Outreach. This role is responsible for the development and oversight of program initiatives and activities, such as the national Invention to Venture (I2V) workshops program (www.invention2venture.org) and other programs that support emerging entrepreneurs in the University environment. The successful candidate will lead the development and implementation of creative strategies for reaching target audiences, organization of regional and national networks around programmatic objectives, serve as the principal point of representation and liaison with external constituencies for these programs, developing outside funding sources and supervising projects and personnel. This position requires an articulate and accomplished leader who is at ease with multi-tasking and producing to deadlines, has superior interpersonal, communications and writing skills, and is highly proficient in the use of relevant software tools.
