MALSI 2010 Notebook Published

The Notebook of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Innovation Day 2010 is published.

The MTTC held the third annual Mass Life Sciences Innovation Day on June 2. The event again attracted over 350 attendees. Sue Windham Bannister, the Lt. Governor, Bob Coughlin, Matt Emmmens (CEO of Vertex) and Len Zon, Harvard Stem Cell institute were among the speakers. This year the poster session was very well attended and received.

The winners of the Big Undiscovered Idea Poster Competition were:

$1,000 - Diagnostics for All “Patterned-paper microfluidics as a low-cost platform for advanced point-of-care diagnostics in low resource settings”

$500 - Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, School of Public Health “Somah, Preserving Organs for Transplantation”

$250 - Annovation Bio Pharma “Better Sedative-Hypnotics for Anesthesia and Sedation”

$500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize

The Lemelson-MIT Prize is awarded to an outstanding mid-career inventor, who has developed a patented product or process of significant value to society, which has been adopted for practical use, or has a high probability of being adopted. By recognizing and funding younger, mid-career inventors, the prize is designed to spur inventive careers and provide role models for future generations of inventors.

$100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability

The Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability recognizes and supports inventors or innovators whose work enhances economic opportunities and community well-being in developing and/or developed countries, while protecting and restoring the natural environment. Issues of sustainability include quality of air, water or soil; or pertain to health, energy, agriculture, shelter, biodiversity, or ecosystem management.

The deadline for nominations for both Awards is Tuesday, October 6th, 2009.
