This position will work in the Office of Intellectual Property & Commercial Ventures to protect and commercialize new inventions arising from research conducted at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, and to create and manage relationships with industry. Responsibilities will include evaluating invention disclosures, marketing intellectual property, negotiating agreements, and serving as a resource to faculty and staff regarding the patent and technology transfer process. In addition, this position will help to develop and establish office processes and procedures, and to manage special projects.


1. Evaluate invention disclosures by performing patent prior art searches, evaluating market potential and commercial viability.

2. Negotiate and draft routine and complex confidential disclosure, material transfer, license, and sponsored research agreements.

3. With the Director, lead in marketing the capabilities of the office to MEE faculty and staff, industry, and the investment community.

4. Prepare non-confidential technical summaries, and translate scientific language into terms appropriate for marketing pieces and business negotiation.

5. Develop and establish business relationships with the pharmaceutical, biotech, and investment community around MEE’s intellectual property, and research and clinical capabilities.

6. Interact and communicate with pharmaceutical companies.

7. Build and improve IPCV’s website, and MEE intellectual property marketing capabilities.

8. Advise and educate MEE faculty and staff regarding material transfer and confidential disclosure agreements, and the commercialization of research at MEE.

9. Other duties as directed or required.


• Bachelors required. Advanced degree preferred or combination of education and experience.
• Five or more years’ experience in technology licensing or business development in a commercial and/or academic organization.
• Experienced in negotiating and drafting licenses, sponsored research, material transfer, and non-disclosure agreements.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work independently.
• Demonstrated ability to work closely with university faculty and staff, industry representatives, and patent attorneys.
• Excellent organization and time-management skills with the ability to multi-task and follow through to completion.
