A Fireside Chat with Irwin Jacobs

May 21, 2009
6:00 PMto8:00 PM

Irwin Jacobs - Telecommunications Engineer, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist

Location:
Advanced Technology Manufacturing Center
151 Martine Street, Fall River, MA

Irwin Jacobs, who grew up in New Bedford, has had an unusual career trajectory embracing both change and opportunity. He started a degree in hotel management but soon changed to engineering. He left an MIT faculty position to join a start-up university on the other side of the country and then left his academic career to run a start-up company he had co-founded. He led his second start-up, QUALCOMM, for over 20 years from its creation into the Fortune 500 - the cell phone in your pocket or purse works because of the technology developed by QUALCOMM. With the success of QUALCOMM, he has become a major philanthropist, giving to organizations in San Diego, in Cambridge, and in New Bedford. At this Fireside Chat, Irwin will talk about his entrepreneurial experiences and what he learnt along the way.

Dr. Jacobs will be joined by Doug Banks, Editor, Mass High Tech
