Speaker Bios:
Isabelle M. Clauss
Dr. Isabelle Clauss is a Counsel in the Boston office of Foley Hoag LLP. Isabelle primarily focuses her intellectual property practice on issues in the field of biotechnology. She is knowledgeable about such diverse technologies as molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry, gene therapy, genomics, diagnostic assays and bioinformatics, and has provided counseling on bioprospecting matters. For clients such as universities, research institutes, and both large and small biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, Isabelle files and prosecutes patent applications, manages patent portfolios, prepares patentability, patent invalidity and non-infringement opinions, and provides freedom to operate opinions. She also undertakes transactional due diligence of patent portfolios, and offers litigation support. As a native speaker of the French language, she counsels in matters where a strong knowledge of the French language is necessary.
Isabelle’s extensive technical background in the life sciences includes graduate studies of the mechanism by which interferons (natural proteins secreted by mammalian cells) induce the expression of various genes involved in the establishment of an antiviral state in mammalian cells. Before entering law school she conducted postdoctoral research in the field of immunology, with Dr. Laurie H. Glimcher at Harvard School of Public Health (1990 to 1994). Her work involved characterizing the role of transcription factors in the regulation of genes involved in immune reactions and bone development.
J. Peter Fasse
Peter Fasse is a Principal in the Boston office of Fish & Richardson P.C. His practice emphasizes patent prosecution, opinion work, and client counseling in a wide variety of technologies, with an emphasis on biotechnology and other biological and medical fields. His past experience includes patent litigation in various technical disciplines, and trade secret litigation.
Mr. Fasse has experience in various fields including molecular biology, chemistry, combinatorial chemistry, medical imaging, diagnostics, and therapy, bioinformatics, optics, biomechanical and biomedical engineering, software, and Internet-based business methods. Specific applications relate to, e.g., human and bacterial genes and polypeptides, nucleic acid probes, tissue engineering, thrombolytic agents, near infrared scanning catheters, laser scanning optical cytometers, lithotriptors, “biochips,” laser ablation devices, keratotomy, optical filters, supercritical fluid deposition of semiconductors, balloon angioplasty devices, CO2 recycling power plants, infant formulas, cellular adhesion inhibitors, implantable continuous drug delivery devices and microcapsules, software to reduce background in spectrophotometers, ultrasound probes, magneto-optic scanning heads, polychelating agents, cytokines such as IL-8 and PF4, and diagnostic and therapeutic methods for, e.g., AIDS, cancer, autism, diabetes, Chagas’ disease, and various bacterial and fungal infections.
Peter graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology B.S. Bioelectrical Engineering, May 1983, and B.S. Life Sciences, December 1983 and George Washington University J.D. 1987.
Faustino A. Lichauco
Faustino Lichauco is a Principal in the Boston office of Fish & Richardson P.C. His practice emphasizes preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the fields of communication, analog and digital signal processing, control systems, optical networks, medical devices, computer hardware, and software, among others. Mr. Lichauco’s previous technical experience includes service as Documentation Manager of Mathsoft (1988-1996) and a member of the Technical Staff at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory (1983-1987).
Faustino graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology B.S., M.S. Electrical Engineering and Computer Science 1982 and Suffolk University Law School J.D. 1996.
